Accounting Manager

Department: Admin - Finance

POSITION TITLE: Accounting Manager STATUS: FT, Exempt GRADE: 7

DEPT/PROGRAM NAME: Finance REPORTS TO: Controller

SUPERVISES: Accounting Staff Pay Range: $85,000-$95,000


SUMMARY: The Accounting Manager is a point of contact for the YWCA Metro Chicago accounting and finance needs. This position will be at the downtown Metropolitan location at 1 N. LaSalle Street, Suite #1700 office and is responsible for planning and implementing a fiscal strategy that aligns company goals and objectives. Direct areas of responsibility include accounting and financial oversight, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory compliance, working closely with YWCA internal operational teams to develop, implement, and maintaining effective business and accounting controls.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Expected to display strong and sound business acumen while possessing the ability to communicate effectively, discuss financial related matters with diverse groups, prepare oral and written reports and maintain a high level of confidentiality. Actively promotes YWCA mission statement and contributes towards maintaining a positive work environment.



ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assures general ledger accounts are properly charged through detail reviews of automatic system entries (accounts payable, accounts receivable, etc.) and other source documents.
  • Prepares journal entries as required to reflect transactions occurring during accounting period.
  • Analyzes and reconciles various general ledger accounts to assure propriety of postings.
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly financial reports for management and performs associated research and analysis as required.
  • Assists in the preparation of external reports for audit, funders and other stakeholders.
  • Maintains fixed asset records, project lists, and account subledgers.
  • Assist in the development of cost allocation factors by gathering information and conducting studies as necessary.
  • In cases where payment is in question, audits contracts, orders, and vouchers, and prepares reports to substantiate individual transactions prior to settlement.
  • Perform month-end close activities including processing journal entries and accruals, completing cash and balance sheet reconciliations, booking fixed and prepaid assets, etc.
  • Responsible for compliance and regulatory issues as they relate to the financial activities of the company.
  • Effectively motivate team to maximize performance and job satisfaction.
  • Work with Managing Directors in the development and enforcement of proper internal safeguards specifically designed to ensure the protection of YWCA and all of its financial assets.
  • Develop and implement strategies for generating and conserving resources/revenues for YWCA and monitor implementation and operational effectiveness.
  • Make recommendations to improve all aspects of the YWCA financial system, from data collection to external reporting functions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervise employees in the Fiscal Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. A minimum of three to five years of experience with fund accounting in a non-profit or government entity is required. Thorough understanding of GAAP, such as debits and credits, cash versus accrual accounting, etc. are required. Experience in using a computerized accounting system, inclusive of general journal entries, adjusting entries, cost allocations and reporting is required, with skills in G/L and financial statements. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SQL Queries, and advanced Excel features such as pivot tables and VLOOKUPs required. Blackbaud Financial Edge experience preferred.

The position requires the ability to implement and administrate grant compliance and reporting requirements. The incumbent must be highly skilled in dealing with financial and numerical data, with the ability to manage time according to changing priorities. The ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a deadline-oriented environment is required. The required quality of work output requires a special emphasis on accuracy, attention to detail and flexibility in prioritization.

The position requires the ability to communicate with multiple constituents and to collaborate effectively with people at all levels of authority. Communication skills must include the ability to explain financial reports to those who may not have a financial or budgeting background, with skills in concept clarification.


EDUCATION REQUIRED: A bachelor’s degree, from an accredited college or university, with a major area of study in Accounting Finance, Business, is highly preferred.


WORK SCHEDULE: WORK SCHEDULE: HYBRID – Work from home 2 days a week, in the office 3 days a week. Normal working hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. This position may require work on some evenings and weekends. Schedule can vary depending on the needs of the agency.
