Educator - PMC

POSITION TITLE: Educator STATUS: Exempt, FT GRADE: 3

REPORTS TO: Coordinator, Education Services SUPERVISES: N/A


SUMMARY: The Educator is responsible for the development, scheduling, and implementation of YWCA gender-based violence prevention programs to audiences in schools, community groups and other settings. The Educator engages in community relationships to promote knowledge and collaborations. The Educator actively supports the promotion of synergy across YWCA programs and in Racial Justice work. *Note: This position description also is valid for a Bilingual Educator.


COLLABORATES WITH: The Educator collaborates with: Manager of Education Services and the other location team and staff members; YWCA staff members; Volunteers; representatives of Community and State agencies and coalitions; teachers and school age children.


ESSENTIAL responsibilities: This role involves a combination of community outreach, education, advocacy, and reporting, all aimed at preventing gender-based violence and supporting survivors. It requires a commitment to professional development and staying informed about best practices in the field.

Direct Services: Schedule and present Gender-based Prevention Education programs: Organize and deliver educational programs focused on preventing gender-based violence within specific communities.

Speak to community groups, businesses, and organizations: Engage with various community stakeholders, including community groups, businesses, professionals, and religious organizations, to raise awareness about sexual abuse and sexual violence issues.

Community Engagement: Assist with professional training: Support the training of professionals, potentially related to gender-based violence prevention. Plan and present training conferences: Organize and conduct training conferences, possibly targeting teachers and students. Maintain relationships with model schools and youth organizations: Foster ongoing partnerships and collaborations with schools and youth-focused organizations in the local service area. Participate in resource fairs and events: Attend and schedule participation in resource fairs, sponsored events like "Take Back the Night," and other community events that align with the mission. Participate in city, state, and national coalitions: Collaborate with various coalitions and advocacy groups at different levels to support sexual abuse and violence prevention efforts. Network with community groups and state agencies: Build connections with local community groups and state agencies to provide services related to sexual abuse and violence prevention, particularly in targeted areas.

Reporting: Maintain awareness of potential child abuse cases: Stay vigilant and informed about possible cases of child abuse. Report related incidents: Follow mandatory reporting requirements and report any incidents as necessary. Maintain member confidentiality: Adhere to confidentiality regulations and guidelines set by law or funding sources. Manage statistical records: Keep comprehensive records of program activities and outcomes in accordance with funding and organizational guidelines.

Professional Development: Continuing education: Pursue ongoing professional development by completing at least twelve hours of continuing education each year, with a focus on gender-based violence. Allocate at least six of the annual twelve hours to address the needs of specific member populations served by the organization. Additional training: Complete other continuing education and training requirements as specified by ICASA (Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault) or other relevant agencies/funders.


NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: May work with, or assist in, the supervision of volunteers. Assist with planning special programs, i.e., Sexual Assault Awareness Month, YWCA Week without Violence, Day of Commitment.


OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED: Other duties outside of the responsibilities of the position may be assigned, whether for a project, special needs task or other assignment.


QUALIFICATIONS Previous training in sexual assault and/or related issues is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience is also fully qualifying. The facilitator must have well-developed oral and written communication skills and public speaking. Other knowledge and demonstrated skills for the position relate to collaboration, communication and leadership, including effective interpersonal skills; a working knowledge of racism and violence against women; and enthusiasm to expand the knowledge base. Background in theater or performance may also be advantageous.

The role requires developed skill in analysis to review data and program outcomes. Intermediate level skills in MS Office and Outlook are necessary, with additional required knowledge of Internet use and the completion of web-based forms. Knowledge of the local geographic service area is highly advantageous.

Professional Training Required: Complete the ICASA forty-hour sexual assault crisis intervention training within ninety days of employment start date (if not completed within the prior two years). Complete other continuing education and training as set by ICASA or other agencies/funders, in addition to undertaking any needed renewal of 40-hr training.

Note: A bilingual Educator must have both conversational and written fluency in the language of the foreign-language only population that is served. Cultural Competency and proficiency in the population’s language and English are required.


EDUCATION REQUIRED: At minimum, a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from an accredited college or university, in a related field such as Human Services, Social Work, etc. An equivalent combination of education and experience is also fully qualifying.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical and environmental demands described represented here of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The Educator must be available for a flexible work schedule that includes potential on-call shifts. Work day consists of spending time at schools, and giving presentations, with noise levels which are usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the Educator is regularly required to sit; stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to fingers, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch; and talk or hear. The Educator must occasionally lift and/or move materials that may weigh up to 15 pounds. The Educator may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions during travel to education events. WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. This position may require work on some evenings and weekends. Schedule can vary depending on the needs of the agency
